AsiaOne, citing The Star, reports an expert estimate, described as conservative, that Malaysia's prolonged transboundary haze is costing between RM20 million and RM50 million daily in healthcare bills, business disruption and lost productivity. A public health specialist says national respiratory illness costs rose from around RM21 million in the 1997 haze to RM410 million in 2013. He adds that heart and blood vessel effects and staff absence are not fully counted.

AI Predicts Missed Pediatric Appointments, But Social Barriers Point to Real Fixes

Bioengineer.org reports an observational study in Pediatric Research that tested a transformer-based model on 7,931 pediatric appointments at six Houston-area clinics, 34.8 percent of which were no-shows. Adding social-needs screening data left prediction accuracy unchanged, but unconfirmed appointments, inactive patient portals, transportation needs and housing instability were linked to higher no-show odds. The roughly five-month study window and missing data limit conclusions.
